New Year's Resolution

Photography is a lifelong process

A bike ride

A midnight bicycle ride

In my early 20's, I went on an extended bicycle ride along the eastern edge of the United States. The bicycle was overburdened with tent, cookstove, other camping gear and a Wista 4x5 field camera plus tripod, changing bag, and a few film holders.

Is it art?

Is photography 'Art'?

I no longer have the luxury of knowing and caring whether photography is art or not. For me the discussion is probably better framed as is photography 'fine art'? By this, for me, the question means can the medium of photography be used in such a way as to allow the deepest levels of human awareness conscious expression?

Chapter 7. Visualization, Composition and Art

Visualization

A friend recently wrote and began a discussion with the following:

Level 5

combining film development and exposure
As of Wed, Apr 18, 2001 we are developing the next level of quiz question. This is an experimental section, development is only beginning. Clicking the button below will probably not crash your browser, but some of the expected features may not be working correctly or may be absent.

upcoming plans for chapter 6

Level 4

calculating film exposure
We now move on to another critical area of the Zone System - film exposure. Film exposure is primarily a function of shadow placement. So the questions for this level are a bit simpler in appearance that the questions for level 3.

Level 1

Now onto how to solve the basic problem of determining luminance range.
The interact quiz will present you with a theoretical subject that has been
metered in the shadow area and in the highlight area. The results are returned
as Fstop numbers. The lower f- number is the shadow reading. The higher f-number

Level 2

place-and-fall relationships

Assuming that you came through the luminance range exercise you now have the skills necessary to determine luminance range. Let's do something with those skills.

Chapter 6. Critical Thinking Skills

luminance range
This interactive quiz points to one of the first things you need to master. You need to be able to count fstops. The range of fstops for a subject is known as its luminance range. The luminance range of a subject is one of the starting points for establishing the mechanics of an individual Zone System exposure.
